30/6/14 Performing Arts arrive to Barcelona by the hand of Grec Festival 2014
The Grec Festival is back in its 38th edition to become the star of Barcelona summer, with a programme of theatre, music, dance, circus and opera. The Grec Festival of Barcelona will take place throughout whole July and in various theatres and venues in the city, but is mostly located on the Monjuïc hill, is Teatre Grec, the iconic Greek Theatre in Montjuïc Mountain, one of the highest points of the city.
The Festival was born with the desire to offer entertainment, which blur the lines between various languages, mixing figures, genre and styles. The Festival includes 35 venues around the city. In addition to the conventional theatres (Romeo, Villarroel, Sala Beckett, Teatre Lliure and Sala Muntaner), this summer new areas have been added, such as the Castle of Montjuïc, Museum of Archaeology, the Maritime Museum and the MACBA Chapel.
‘M.U.R.S’ is the show directed by the prestigious Catalan acrobatical theatre group, La Fura dels Bau – founded in 1979 in Barcelona and famous for their urban theatre and use of unusual settings- that will begin the festival with a free performance in Montjuïc Castle on 30 June. The festival formally begins on 1 July in Teatre Grec, from the hand of ‘Wonderland’, Barcelona debut of ‘Gallim Dance’, a contemporary dance company from New York.
Grec 2014 includes, as every year, the best international performances to unite the greatest Catalan talents. Some examples are ‘Toneelgroep Amsterdam’ company, which already delighted the attendee in Barcelona last year; ‘Sadari Movement Laboratory’ Korean company, which has a unique physical theater, video projections and innovative sounds in the performances they do. The great English star of contemporary dance, Hofesh Shechter, will also be part of Grec Festival 2014. They will present different proposals who will surprise everybody.
Regarding the national scene, we could underline established names of Catalan theater scence, such as Sergi Berbel, which premiered ‘Vells temps’ (Old times) by Harold Pinter. Carme Portaceli will present ‘Krum’, made by an Israeli dramatist, Hanoch Levin. Catalan stage director Agusti Villaronga will present ‘El testament de María’ (Maria’s testament).
There is also a musical part. Mayte Mayte Martín, Ludovico Einaudi, Anoushka Shankar, Marina Rossell o la japonesa Hiromi will play at Sala BARTS, Teatre Greec and Jamboree.
And what is a new initiative, in 2014 will take place a group of free, intimate and small concerts in the bottom of the Teatre Grec garden, with Maria Rodés, Renaldo&Clara, Ramón Mirabet or Caïm Riba performances.
From our Barcelona luxury hotel, Hotel Omm, we encourage you to take the most of this opportunity to enjoy theater, music and dance highest quality in the pretty mountain of Montjuïc, one of the biggest green gardens in the city and where most of the shows will take place.
