The 20th International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art held in Barcelona on 13, 14 and June 15 comes loaded with new features. The most important: the festival is moving its daytime headquarters to the Fira Montjuïc area in Plaça d’Espanya, an emblematic location in the city.
¿What is Sónar?
Sónar is the International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art created in 1994, which is held in Barcelona for three days every June.
Sónar is a pioneering festival that is unique in terms of its format and content: it is an international benchmark of the first order thanks to an outstanding cultural range that combines entertainment, artistry, the cutting edge and experimentation with new musical trends that set the international agenda.
At all its events, Sónar sounds out the current landscape of electronic music and its interactions and hybridization with other artistic disciplines, bringing together established artists and the emerging talent that renews and innovates in all areas of musical and audiovisual creation.
The festival has regularly travelled beyond Spain’s frontiers since 2002, with more than 30 events in different places around the world, adapting the Sónar philosophy to unique venues and environments, and highlighting the most interesting homegrown talent and the scene in the city where it takes place. As well as the event in Barcelona, Sónar organizes festivals every year in other cities, including São Paulo and Tokyo. In previous years, it has travelled to Buenos Aires, New York, London, Frankfurt, Seoul, Lisboa, Lyon, Hamburg, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Boston, Denver, Oakland and Los Ángeles, among many other destinations around the world.
The Sónar Barcelona artistic programme is divided between the activities at Sónar by Day (concerts, showcases, professional zone, exhibition area), the keynote of which is the search for new talent, and the large format shows at Sónar by Night, which feature more well-known leading names on the international music landscape.
Visitors from over 90 countries attend Sónar each year to enjoy an impeccable line-up featuring hundreds of artists from all over the world. Sónar is also a meeting point for professionals from various sectors in the creative industries, who find SonarPro an ideal place to do business, exchange ideas and network.
The new venue:
While Sónar by Night consolidates its four-stage format, (SonarClub, SonarLab, SonarPub and SonarCar, located next to the bumper cars), after 19 years at the CCCB, the MACBA and the surrounding area, the festival is moving its daytime headquarters to the Fira Montjuïc area in Plaça d’Espanya, an emblematic location in the city.
Sónar by Day keeps its 4 stages (SonarVillage by Estrella Damm, SonarHall, SonarDôme and SonarComplex), all of which have increased capacities in their new locations.
The new location will breathe new life into Sónar by Day, with extensive spaces that will facilitate optimal movement by those attending and the professionals participating.
The new Sónar by Day is significantly nearer Sónar by Night, which is still at its usual venue in the Fira Gran Via area in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, at just 20 minutes from our Barcelona centre hotel. With the festival shuttle bus, distance between the two locations is now only 10 minutes.
