29/8/14 ‘The barber of Seville’ at Liceu
‘The Barber of Seville’, the most famous comic opera of all time, comes to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , from September 14th to 25th. The performance takes place in Seville in the late XVIII century and tells the story of grumpy old Bartolo to keep Rosina away from all suitors and marry him. It is the contrast of an archetype of the ancient world, Bartolo, against the modernity of a lover, Almaviva.
Il barbiere di Siviglia, opera in two acts, is a libretto by Cesare Sterbini based on the eponymous comedy by French playwright Beaumarchais, and with music by Gioachino Rossini. The version by Joan Font (by the Catalan theater company Comediants) uses devices from popular and street drama that are characteristic of that company’s style. It is one of the great works of the genre of opera buffa, with playful music of Rossini, emphasizing the comicality of the play.
This masterpiece is the Gran Teatre del Liceu opening for the 2014-15 season. For more than 15 years, ‘The Barber of Seville’ have not been represented at Liceu. This performance will be the first of several great operas that will be played at the Catalan theatre.
