The Grec Festival 2018 arrives to surprise

In Barcelona we have an international festival that takes the stage every summer to bring the best of theater, dance, music and circus to the city. It is the Grec Festival, which this year arrives with a novelty of the most intriguing: the Grec turns its gaze towards Asia.

Located in the emblematic Grec Theater of Barcelona, the new edition of the festival presents a proposal that contrasts the vision each continent has about the culture of each, two continents as different as they are distant, turning Barcelona into a bridge between Western and Asian creative expressions.

Travel to Asia as a storyline

From July 2 to the 31st, the stage of the Grec will be the place where many theater and dance artists from all over the world will present their shows to the Barcelona public. And following the star theme of this edition, the festival gives prominence to some of the most acclaimed performances in Asia.

One of the most anticipated is the Asian contemporary dance company Cloud Gate Dance Theater of Taiwan, which will perform the presentation of La Pina Baush in Seoul, choreographed by Eun-Me Ahn and music by John Cage. In addition, this prestigious Asian dance company will bring samples of kathak dance and contemporary dance from Akram Khan Xenos, based on the trenches of the First World War.

“Nuevas especias“, the new slogan of the festival

The Grec Festival premieres its motto this year. “Nuevas especias” is a game of words that is inspired by the Silk Road, the historical commercial itinerary through which so many new things, from precious fabrics to gastronomic elements, arrived from Asia to Europe. Also known as the Route of the Species, it was also a cultural exchange route like the one the festival wants to emulate with the edition of this year offering the public an artistic and cultural exchange on the stage.

A total of 83 shows make this summer’s Grec program. Highlights include the controversial play Belgian Rules by Jan Fabre, Euridice by British director Katie Mitchell, Vania by Álex Rigola, Minuit by Yoann Bourgeois (the great leader of the French circus) and La Plaza de Conde by Torrefiel under the direction of Tanya Beyeler, forget the kick-off to the festival that will be given with Guilgamesh’s poem, rei d’Uruk, with the debut of La Perla 29 and Oriol Broggui.

The Grec Festival is, in short, one of the most important cultural events in the city. Do not miss this classic Barcelona festival, which arrives to Barcelona in good weather.
