When you hear Philippe Jaroussky’s voice for the first time, it is inevitable not to be confused with the incredible gift that this French artist has to delight and amaze theaudience. Born in Maisons-Laffitte, France, he studied music at the Conservatoire de Versailles, where he learned violin, piano, harmony and counterpoint, later receiving his diploma as a violinist at the Faculty of Ancient Music Conservatory of Paris.
He started his first singing lessons in 1996 with his teacher Nicole Faillien, whom he describes as his second mother for the close relationship that both kept still, but he did not make his debut on stage until 1999 at the Festival Royaumont, where he surprised the audience with the sensibility a man with a woman’s voice can transmits.
Phenomenon of opera
Jaroussky is considerate by many as a phenomenon in the current era of opera for having such a unique voice that many consider a referral of the castrati intonations. He participated in the Baroque play “Giulio Cesar” by composer Handel, along with the renowned mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, who said that listening to Philippe the first time made an impact on her by the subtlety of his voice and musicality in his intonation.
It is not the first time Jarouskky comes to Spain, he was at Teatro Real in Madrid in 2010, and this concert was a success, but this time it is Barcelona’s turn to receive him. Thanks to the organization of the Fundació Orfeó Català – Palau de la Música he is giving a concert on Monday 14 November at 20.30hr with the Freiburger Barockorchester and Petra Müllejans as director.
