Importance of Still lifes

In order to understand the interest of such an art exhibition is essential to recognize the role of still life in art.

First, still-life paintings are works of art that represent real objects in a particular space. That is, a still life can capture objects, materials, fruits or animals in a given space. The artistic effect that attracts the attention of the spectators lie in the play of light and shades of colour for a more serene look. The colours help to create a harmony that is present in these productions. The feeling of comfort and tranquillity that those works transmit are widely admired among art lovers.

Moreover, still lifes cause a stir because they convey a symbolic message beyond the representations of common objects. Thus, the artwork stands out the historical and / or moral content that the viewer can associate with a certain image.

Still lifes were an artistic genre of great importance during the Renaissance and Baroque. In these historic and pictorial times, art acted as a mirror of the social, and messages poured into the works to reflect the mundane aspects of reality that was happening then.

The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya counts among its walls with a collection of 120 works of the seventeenth century Renaissance and Baroque. This exhibition of still lifes provides this collection with a greater number of jewels of Renaissance art and, in turn, provide an enriching insight into the art of the seventeenth century and especially the importance of still lifes. Thus, the MNAC has a wider variety of artists, and a higher quality on the overview of the art of the Golden Age.

This exhibition features 19 paintings, some exhibited for the first time to the public, by Spanish artists of the Golden Age.
